Well, how to describe The Stanley Parable? You play as Stanley, a simple office worker who finds that one day he is alone in the office. A story unfolds that is unusual, quirky, self-aware, intelligent and downright surreal. I guess the best way to describe it is as a branching story where you get to make decisions, and it all begins with a simple choice of left, or right?
This was one of the games that started the modern ‘walking simulator’ genre, which is a name that really does not give this game justice. Sure, the only controls are to move around and sometimes interact with things such as doors and buttons (so many buttons!) but this game also has a narrator, an amazingly well written and sarcastic narrator. Stanley just stood there doing nothing at all.Graphically there’s not much to say about it; it’s not the sort of game that wants you to stop and stare at the scenery.
Go back and look at that fern. The music and sound design are very well done. Both music and silence are used to great effect throughout. This game is really difficult to review. Saying anything about it feels like a spoiler. It’s a game that is best played with no knowledge of what is to come. You will have an experience which is very unique and is more than worth the money in my opinion.
There is a question that often gets asked; if you could forget a book, film or game so that you could experience it for the first time again, what would it be? My answer will always be The Stanley Parable. As a relaxing experience I think it’s great, however if you are struggling with your mental health you should be aware that one ending does involve suicide; not graphic at all but potentially could be upsetting to some.
However I still feel this is a really fun and relaxing experience overall so I have to give The Stanley Parable a Lio Gaming’s rating of 10 out of 10. Thank you so much for reading.
